    About Us
    • Grupo de Mujeres Latinas

      Our Mission
Many women in the Belmont district of the Bronx face marginalization due to their life circumstances, including childhood trauma, limited formal education, lack of legal status, the negative impacts of 'machismo,' and single motherhood. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these issues, contributing to health challenges like anxiety and depression. In response, Grupo de Mujeres Latinas (GML) was created to expand parish offering classes, workshops, and support groups designed not only to provide life skills but also to promote a sense of dignity and self-worth.
The formation portion of the program is fundamental, offering individual and communal spaces for women to explore their interior life and share in a safe environment what is often kept secret or guarded. Additionally, staff meet with women individually to understand their needs and offer references to services and organizations. Our project aims to provide women with the tools to improve their self-knowledge and encourage them to be transformational leaders in their families and community.

      Our Goals
      1. Help women develop skills.
      2. Provide a space where women are encouraged to share their stories, listen to others, and collectively encounter healing and discover solutions.
      3. Facilitate access to social services in the Bronx for immigrant women and their families.

Through this program, women have an increased sense of self-worth and empowerment. Women in the program develop a network of solidarity, friendship, and community often lacking in a large, transient context. Women are connecting to the larger Bronx community and Fordham University, becoming more aware of and availing themselves of services available to them.

The Curran Center for American Catholic Studies sponsors a vibrant undergraduate honors concentration in Catholic Studies. That means that in addition to majors in the humanities, sciences, or business, these students (with a min. GPA of 3.5) take seminars in Catholic Studies. In addition, they fill out their programs by going to cultural events and lectures, receiving dedicated mentoring, and engaging community partners—including the wonderful collaboration with the GML.

Students from Catholic Studies have participated in numerous programs of the GML including, classes in computers, exercise, and sewing. This collaboration has allowed them to take their studies of American Catholicism beyond the classroom to engage the lived reality of their campus neighbors at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish. Most importantly, the relationships that have come from this accompaniment have made a life-long impact on them. Their Fordham experience is so much richer because of the amazing women at GML.

        Partnership with GML:
Through the mentorship program, DLP and GML are trying to:
        • Help the newly arrived asylum seekers have a better chance to succeed as residents of NYC.
        • Create bonds between the community already established in NYC and new arrivals.
        • Empower our Women's Group by facilitating space where known women leaders can exercise their leadership. We strongly believe that from these workshops most women will see themselves as mentors.
        • These workshops serve as a strategy to create a "Train the trainers" system that can serve in other events, programs and groups also under DLP.

        Experience collaborating with GML:
Meeting the women of GML has been refreshing. DLP feels embraced by the women of this group. Our experience has been that of finding a place where women and the DLP can talk and share everything that is important for women in general and these women and DLP in specific.  GML is a place to love and learn. The DLP has grown in a loving environment by the direct influence of GML.

EFNEP: 55 Years of Nutrition Education Impacts
EFNEP has made a difference in the lives of rural and urban families in America since 1969, when Congress authorized $30 million for this program. EFNEP represents a federal (USDA/NIFA) state (land-grant university) and local (county) partnership supporting the nutritional security of low-income families. Currently, 76 institutions provide the program nationwide through Cooperative Extension at 1862 and 1890 land-grant universities in al 50 states, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. Peer educators deliver group and individual nutrition education tailored to the needs of families and the communities in which they live. EFNEP contributes to the personal development of program staff and participants as they gain skills and confidence, which can transfer to other aspects of their lives.
Interactive sessions that support improved behaviors in food safety, food preparation, food resource management and nutrition topics are key to the program's success. Longitudinal studies show that new behaviors are maintained, and that new skills learned through EFNEP can last a lifetime - and across generations.

        Experience with GML:
“As a community educator, I can say that I loved the experience of work in with the community of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. They are very united, enthusiastic, and with a great spirit of improvement! I can't wait to come back in our new semester 2024-2025 teaching Health and Nutrition for our families so that they have happier and healthier futures.” - Nancy

Her Migrant Hub Health+, Inc. (HMH) is a community-driven organization that empowers and connects people with lived experiences of forced migration in New York to claim their rights and access effective health and mental healthcare. HMH builds on the existing leadership skills of asylum-seeking women to share resources with new arrivals and provide training for service providers.

Founded in 2021, with the support of Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, HMH aims to elevate the voices of women with lived experiences of forced migration, while promoting justice and building community. We work togetHER, as a team of migrant women activists, social work students, community partners and educators to learn, teach, and better equip current and future practitioners to work with migrant populations, improve quality of services, and inform policy makers and legislators to improve protections for people with a forced migration background.

        Partnership with GML:
HMH is partnering with several community-based organizations throughout New York City. Since 2023, Grupos del Mujeres Latinas (GML) became one of our core partners. We are working together focusing on community building and empowerment through training and direct mental health support, while centering the voices of women with a forced migration background in program development and policy advocacy, in the Bronx. Our partnership with GML played a major role in helping us identify local leaders and collaborating on several entrepreneurial projects. In 2023-2024, we placed an MSW HMH student intern with GML; and completed the first Community Mental Health Education (CMHE) training of 12 GML women leaders. Most recently, we partnered in preparing for the launch of Her Migrant Grounds Cafe (HMG), with two GML women activists joining the HMG strategic planning team.

In a heartening demonstration of faith and community spirit, a devoted group of immigrant Latina women are volunteering their time and energy to support their neighborhood through a variety of impactful activities. Grounded in their faith, these women organize weekly food distributions, ensuring that families in need receive essential nourishment. Their efforts extend to various other initiatives, each reflecting their deep commitment to serving and uplifting those around them. These women are a testament to the strength and compassion that faith-based community service can bring, as they work tirelessly to support and empower their own community.

Our support group is designed to help Latinas navigate mental health symptoms, family and interpersonal conflicts, and develop effective coping skills. This safe and welcoming space provides an environment where participants can share their experiences, receive support, and learn from other women facing similar challenges.

As a Catholic parish, we are responding to Pope Francis’s call to care for our environment as a gift from God, for ourselves and for future generations. We invite all to join in this process, following the call of Jesus in our community.

Grupo de Mujeres Latinas (GML) has launched a new elderly ministry at Bronx Garden, where women visit twice a week to accompany residents in a long-term care facility, many of whom experience deep loneliness and abandonment. This ministry is not just about offering presence and support—it is a mutual exchange of life and faith. As we share stories, prayers, and simple moments of connection, we also receive wisdom, gratitude, and the reminder that every person deserves dignity and companionship. We are excited and proud of this new initiative, as it is a concrete way to put our faith into action, embodying love and solidarity in our local community.

Hello, my name is Elizabeth. I'm part of GML, and I'm very proud of it because it's helped me grow as a person in different ways, especially in terms of living with others and sharing different cultures. I learn a lot from the others; they're truly very entrepreneurial women. I also see how women keep coming forward with that desire to continue growing and, at the same time, to be part of this beautiful project that fills us with so much confidence and commitment. I thank God and at the same time, I pray that GML always exists because we need it so much as a community; it helps us grow.

The GML is a multicultural, entrepreneurial, efficient, educational, and, above all, religious group. We have the opportunity to have a space for everyone, where we learn and are motivated to learn how to run a business with new knowledge in art, crafts, music, dance, and activities in other areas, and from our beloved teachers, mentors, and other colleagues. Mothers also have the opportunity to spend time with their children in educational activities such as the Playground group, Raising Boys / Girls in the Bronx, sociological support groups, and others. Mt. Carmel Church has been of great support and has allowed the GML to have its space so that the community can have opportunities for personal, intellectual, integral, spiritual, and entrepreneurial development. Thank you to all your staff—you know who my dear colleagues are—for your dedication to teaching us all a trade and welcoming us as a family in this group. I am very grateful and blessed to be part of this GML group and its teachings, and to meet wonderful people.

My name is Mónica R. Díaz, and I am 58 years old. I am the mother of a beautiful teenager. I live in the Bronx with her, my husband, and our cat (I love you all). I joined the GML at Mt. Carmel Community about three years ago. I was very well received by our program director. At that time, I was depressed, feeling very sad and alone, despite having my own family. At first, I didn't talk much, but little by little I gained confidence. My first classes were Sewing 1 and 2. As time went by, I developed a more outgoing personality, and today, I can say that the Latina Women's Group has changed my life. I overcame the confinement of the pandemic and the ability to go out and travel long distances. I will never be able to do that again due to an accident with my left ankle. Now, thank God, I can walk without the aid of a cane, but it is no longer the same. I have overcome, in a way, my low self-esteem. I value every moment I spend with GML. The psychological support courses and mental health workshops have helped me immensely. Thank you so much for everything.

My name is Ariadnna Sanchez, and I belong to the GML, which has been a great help and a source of complete satisfaction for me. Before joining this group, I was confused and very stressed, not knowing what to do, feeling alone, and even depressed. Thank God an acquaintance told me about taking sewing classes. I started attending, and when I arrived, I was surprised to find Mujeres Latinas isn't just about classes, but about unity among women, mutual support, empathy, and a place where you feel loved and respected. But above all, I received unconditional support to help me move forward because I belong to GML, where this place becomes a space of tranquility, unity, and love.

Muchas gracias.
My experience with GML was wonderful. Everyone is welcomed with open arms. I felt at peace, and it changed my life for the better. They gave us the opportunity to participate in excellent, informative workshops. The most beautiful thing is that we learned that there are no limitations based on status, color, race, age, etc. I am convinced that I will never stop learning. Thank you so much.

      Ariadnna
